August 2007

Hooray, and all that stuff. SKIN&INK is now 12 times a year! It took 10 years and 4 months to do it, but we pulled it off.

I still remember the phone call I got from Larry Flynt, asking me to be the editor. My entire tattoo background, at the time, consisted of what I overheard my two sons, Jesse and Riley, exchange with their friends. But it was enough, so when Flynt sat me down, knee to knee, with three vice-presidents at a small, cherry wood table in LFP's executive offices, I successfully answered over two hours of hard-hitting questions.

"Do you know how to edit a magazine?" they asked.

"Yes," I said.

"Can you get it out six times a year?"

"Sure," I responded.

"Do you know a lot about the tattoo industry?"

"You bet," I said.

"Have you ever worked with an art director?" they probed.

"Got it covered," I smiled.

"Can you balance your full body weight on the tip of your index finger and sing all the words to the national anthem of Paraguay at the same time?"

"No problemo," I shouted.

Well, they didn't ask exactly that, but they might as well have. I had a golden opportunity to run a tattoo magazine from a major publisher and I wasn't going to say no to anything.

So, a decade later, here we are. The Perretta family are my publishers now, we print on beautiful, shiny paper and
we're available in all the major bookstores, magazine stands, convenience stores and even the better supermarkets. We've won the top award the magazine industry gives, the Eddie, we have readers from every corner of the world and we work with a team of contributors that's the best in the business. What more could we ask for?

World peace.
